Following extensive research and polling of Barnstaple People we have compiled a list of the top five most popular restaurants in town.
Award Winning Restaurant Zena's in Barnstaple
The overwhelming favourite on our barnstaplepeople poll is Fullam on Tuly Street. Deemed to be "the VERY best Chinese around" by Sue Hemphrey on Facebook, Fullam certainly is popular with Barnstaple people for its high quality asian cuisine. valerie_19 reviewed the restaurant in the barnstaplepeople business directory "Don''t be scared by "fine dining" and the decor of this place - it
won''t hurt your wallet. Fullam is fine dining but at an affordable
price. Staff are fantastic because they manage to help you pick between
the Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, Singaporean, and Thai cuisine!"
The favourite bird table for @barnstaplepeeps Twitter followers has to be Nepalese restaurant Gurkha in Market Street. There is no disputing the quality of food at this restaurant however opinion is divided when it comes to service, varying from "The food and service is amazing!!" to "The Gurkha has good food, but it also has the most shambolic service I've seen outside of Fawlty Towers."
For a classy dining experience locals and visitors recommend James Duckett at the Old Custom House on the Strand in Barnstaple. pub_man who came from London to dine at James Duckett's reviewed his experience in the barnstaplepeople business directory " to be honest, this is probably better than about 60% of the restaurants
weve been to in London. Firstly the food is fine dining on another
level because you can tell meticulous attention to detail has been
placed in the preparation. Secondly, the location is fantastic
overlooking the river Taw."
An old favourite with theatre goers, families and lovers is Giovanni's on Boutport Street. will_barrow's review in our business directory says it all "A family run italian restaurant which has been established in Barnstaple
for a number of years now. This restaurant never fails to deliver the
service and quality of food you would expect from a genuine italian
restaurant. the staff are friendly and efficient and really love the
children. large parties are well catered for and if you just fancy a
candlit dinner for two you will not be disappointed either.
i would recommend this restaurant with out hesitation."
Our final mention has to be for Zena's set back in a quaint square on Market Street just behind the pannier market. We only had a couple of votes on our poll and only a few in our other surveys however Zena's has just been named Best Restaurant in the North Devon Food and Drink Awards. No one has reviewed Zena's in our directory but I've been there for lunch. It was heavenly to sit outside under the shady trees on a sunny day pretending I was in Paris!
Of course there were many other restaurants from posh nosh to fast food which you recommended. I had to agree with Lorraine Young on Facebook who recommended "anywhere and anything as long as I'm not cooking!" and I also loved her suggestion of "romantic meal 4 2?? fish and chips in the back of
your car lookin out ova woolacombe beach!! ok-im a cheap date! "
So, there's something for everyone in Barnstaple when it comes to eating out. I was going to say it's "horses for courses" but I think you have to go to France for that!
