I can't help but notice that whilst most of the mainstream music genres are catered for here in Barnstaple, there's very little thought spared for heavy metal fans. It seems to mostly be radio friendly rock at best. Also, I'd be half worried about being beaten up in half the pubs round here because of not just the binge drink/violence culture round here but also because of how I look. Is there anywhere good to go where us heavy metal fans can be left unharassed and have decent music to listen to?

The closest I could come up with are:
Dissention tinyurl.com/mxkr9f
Vampyrouss tinyurl.com/yen5v88
and a list of bands of all ilks and venues here tinyurl.com/y8gyk57
Heavy Metal is one of the most enduring of music genres so I'm sure you're not alone out there. How about starting up your own club?
I appreciate your comments about the drinking/violence culture and this is more likely to happen with gigs in pubs. If there is a dedicated night/venue for a particular type of music I think the binge drinking aspect is less likely.
I know that the Palladium Club in Bideford has had metal bands in the past - try there too.
When I was at university there was always something for everyone no matter how obscure. When you have a massive number of people coming in to a town it is easier to find like minded people. A small town and region like ours makes it much more difficult - Good Luck and let us know how you get on.

ReportBlimey, Vampyrouss are amazing! Thanks for telling me about them. Just my thing! I'll be checking out the list and venues, too. I've lived in London, Plymouth and Exeter in the past, all of which had huge Goth scenes so Barnstaple has come as a bit of a shock, I must admit. Though in the past few years, the stares have stopped bothering me. lol
