I can't imagine that the population of Barnstaple has increased sufficiently to create business for the giant Tesco let alone a Morrison's too. If people start buying their food, clothes, kitchen wares, booze etc from these super stores then who is losing out?

ReportI don't think the new Tesco was neccessary either. I'd much rather have had a large Asda put there. Not everyone in this town has much money and I see Morrisons as a more expensive supermarket. I don't see how they can do well here. Unless it's from families with tonnes of kids who get loads of money from the government and don't work (don't even get me started!!). *sigh*

When I was a student in Derby years ago they used to have a supermarket called Kwiksave - it was the cheapest supermarket I've ever been to. I don't know if they have them down south but a Kwiksave would be brilliant. I think even the cheapest of the supermarkets we have with their own brands still keep prices unnecessarily high along with their competition.

ReportVery true. And whilst the cost of food and living in general increases, our pay doesn't!

ReportA lot of food is cheaper from 'proper' shops which we have plenty of in Barnstaple - if only people could be bothered to shop there.

ReportI know what Barney_Bloggs means - if you want food then walk down Butcher's Row in Barnstaple. Some people have got out of the habit of shopping in the butcher, the baker and candlestick maker. Get yourself a funky trolley and stroll down to Barnstaple's 'real' shops. Also don't miss out on Wyborn's farm shop just round the corner for local fresh fruit and veg.
