Police in Barnstaple are appealing
to the community for information to identify those responsible
for damaging the car on two occasions in a local street.
Officers were first informed that a swastika had been scratched
onto the bonnet of a red Citroen Berlingo hatchback on the night of
Saturday 27 2010.
The family contacted local Police again after another swastika was scratched onto the same car on the night of Monday 3 January whilst parked in
Coronation Street near to the town centre.
Both of these offences are being treated very seriously and are being investigated by the Barnstaple neighbourhood beat team.
The family are at a loss as to why the damage has occurred, and have been caused great distress by the damage to their property.
Sergeant Paul Jones neighbourhood team leader for Barnstaple town
centre said “This damage is not only illegal but has had a dramatic
effect on the owners of the car who live in what is normally a quiet
family street. We are appealing for anyone who may have knowledge of
either of these incidents to contact local Police in confidence.”
This type of damage is not a common occurrence in Barnstaple, and
officers are confident that someone may have witnessed the incidents or
have been with those responsible.
Anyone with information is asked to contact PC 5895 Hodgson at
Barnstaple Police station on telephone 08452 777 444 quoting crime
number CB/11/40.

This is atrocious! The sad thing is that I expect these vandals have no idea what the swastika represents to some people. It has become a graffiti icon representing anarchy and insult without the perpetrators understanding what offence it may cause. Scratching up the family's car is bad enough but why a swastika?
