Stephen Otter the Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police resigned today.
He is to take on the role of Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary.
He was in the last year of a fixed term contract.
The introduction of a Police and Crime Commissioner in November 2012 left Devon and Cornwall Police unable to extend his contract past January 2013.
