Is your spare room full to the brim with an overflow of furniture and personal belongings? Does this render it unusable?
Homeowners could make hundreds of pounds each year by opting to pay for self storage space and then renting out their spare room in their home, a new study by Deloittle Real Estate on behalf of the Self Storage Association. With the average weekly cost of 50 sq ft of self storage space being just £15 per week, and the average local weekly single room rate being £60 per week, there is cash to be made.
The benefits of self storage
Ollie Saunders, partner and head of self storage at Deloitte Real Estate, said a range of benefits are offered by self storage sites, with easy-access facilities and "flexible terms" among them.
"There's no doubt storage is at a premium in many dwellings so it is worth considering the convenience of storing our not day-to-day items such as golf clubs, instruments, ski gear and Christmas decorations as a money-saving option."
A growing industry
Over the UK as a whole, there are believed to be roughly 830 self storage sites, with 30.1 million sq ft of space available to businesses and individual customers.
Mr Saunders concluded: "We've seen a growing trend for business customers taking space, with over a third of occupied space now coming from businesses. Nationally, the average customer's length of stay is 41 weeks."
