Barnstaple's third annual 'Really Big Quiz' hosted by chartered accountants Simpkins Edwards raised over £2,200 for the North Devon Hospice.

The quiz, which took place on Wednesday 7 November at the Barnstaple Hotel, was won for the second year running by a group of friends, The Acolytes, who received a trophy and a case of champagne. Second place was tied between Webbers, a team from Webbers Property Services, and the Drug Runners, a team from Jenson Pharmaceuticals. The tiebreak was won by Webbers, meaning the Drug Runners had to settle for a very respectable third place.

28 teams took part in this year's event and as well as enjoying the challenging quiz, participants took part in an auction and raffle with prizes kindly donated by local businesses. Once the entry fees, raffle and auction funds had been added up, along with some generous donations on the night, the total came to an impressive £2,200, which was presented to the North Devon Hospice.

Comperes for the evening were Adrian Hemmings and Ian Huggett, both partners at Simpkins Edwards, who, along with IT technician Jason Chant, were sporting early growth from their Movember efforts!

Help with collecting the answer sheets came in the form of the Army Cadets from C Coy Devon and as a thank you, Simpkins Edwards made a separate donation to their nominated charity, which is the new chemotherapy unit at North Devon District Hospital.

"We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone that took part and helped us raise such a fantastic amount of money," said Ian Huggett, partner at Simpkins Edwards' Barnstaple office. "And of course, well done to The Acolytes – anybody who has attended the Really Big Quiz will know that there are some tough questions every year and it's certainly no mean feat to come out on top twice! Competition aside, it was great to see so many people having a fun night out and raising money for such an important cause."

Emma Lowe, from North Devon Hospice's fundraising team, said it was an excellent event and thanked organisers and participants alike for their generosity. "The Really Big Quiz is always a highlight of the year, because it's great to see so many teams from various local companies taking part. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the total raised for North Devon Hospice was incredible. Every pound raised will help us care for those affected by cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. We can only provide our essential services thanks to the ongoing support of the local community, so we'd like to thank Simpkins Edwards and everyone who attended for helping us to care for local people."
